It should come as no surprise that a member of the President’s party would advocate violence against those who oppose him. After all, President Trump famously promised to pay the legal bills of supporters who would be willing to attack protesters at campaign rallies. A Minnesota state representative just took those threats to another level with a suggestion that spoke loud and clear.
Minnesota State Representative Pat Garofalo is making social media news after a tweet he sent regarding anti-fascist protests in Portland. As the President’s aides always say, the tweet speaks for itself, and so here it is.
Anyone who is at all familiar with American culture knows what that phrase “give them alone time with Bubba in Appalachia” means. The Republican state representative called for the arrest, detention, and rape of protesters who oppose his own beliefs.
In response, Minnesota’s liberal DFL caucus responded this way:
The Representative responded by saying he wasn’t talking about rape at all and that his opponents were just making stuff up. Well, calling the truth fake news seems to work for the Commander-in-Chief, so of course he would just say that he didn’t mean what everyone knew he meant.
Not His First Time
This is not the first time the Minnesota Republican has gotten himself into hot water over a tweet. He posted this racist tweet about the National Basketball Association in 2014. In it he said, “Let’s be honest, 70% of teams in NBA could fold tomorrow + nobody would notice a difference w/ possible exception of an increase in street crime.”
This Republican is evidence that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. The leader of the Republican party is a man who advocates police brutality publicly, who has bragged about sexual assault and characterized an entire nation of people as rapists.
