If Alabama elects Roy Moore to the Senate, there will be hell to pay as Chris Matthews explained on Morning Joe. (see video below …)
On Tuesday, Chris Matthews and George Will joined Joe Scarborough and Mike Brzezinski on the show to discuss the Alabama Senate race and what consequences the Republican Party will face for supporting accused child molester Roy Moore.
Several women have accused Moore of sexually assaulting them when they were teens. One woman was only 14-years-old at the time.
While it seemed Republicans were going to do the right thing by kicking Moore off the ballot, Donald Trump threw his support behind Moore, causing many Republicans to restore their support. Even Mitch McConnell reversed his previous call for Moore to step aside.
Chris Matthews predicted that Republicans are going to help Moore win the race against Doug Jones because they would rather gain a vote in the Senate by supporting a pedophile instead of voting for the Democrat.
But their support of Moore will come with a price to pay in future elections.
Matthews and the rest of the Morning Joe panel agreed that standing by Moore will be hung around the neck of every single Republican from coast to coast.
“Ask any Catholic priest what it did to him when the priest scandal hit,” Matthews noted in reference to the massive child molestation scandal that hit the Catholic Church. “Every priest felt vulnerable to the charge when people looked at them: are you one of them?”
And just as priests across the country and around the world were painted with the scandal, Republicans across the country will be considered a pedophile or a pedophile enabler.
“Ask the Republicans, do you want to be one of them? One of the Grand Old Pedophiles? The GOP?” Matthews continued. “Because every cheap-shot Democrat in the country, and there are a few of them out there, will use it in every campaign. You’re one of the Crips and the Bloods, basically.”

Prior to Matthews’ epic takedown of the GOP, George Will reminded everyone that Moore was removed from his position as Alabama Chief Justice twice for disobeying the United States Constitution, a document conservatives claim to hold dear. Indeed, Moore believes his religious beliefs trump the Constitution and that’s what he will bring to the Senate, where he will likely use his vote in support of judges who share his beliefs. That puts the entire judicial branch at serious risk of becoming theocratic.
So, there’s definitely more at stake than just a pedophile taking a seat in the Senate.
