If President Donald Trump thought the situation regarding his personal attorney, Michael Cohen, was troubling before, it may be on the verge of becoming an existential threat to the president as Cohen’s options narrow and he has no choice but to turn on his longtime client.
ABC News is reporting that Cohen’s attorneys are now saying they will no longer represent him as the case moves forward.
So far, Cohen has been represented by Stephen Ryan and Todd Harrison of McDermott, Will & Emery LLP. But with their withdrawal from the case, Cohen may now have no choice but to cooperate with federal investigators, sources tell ABC News:
“Cohen, now with no legal representation, is likely to cooperate with federal prosecutors in New York, sources said. This development, which is believed to be imminent, will likely hit the White House, family members, staffers and counsels hard.”
“Your alleged source is wrong.”
Trump has also fretted over the fact that Cohen’s office was raided by federal agents in April, telling reporters:
“It’s an attack on our country in a true sense. It’s an attack on all we stand for. That is really now on a whole new level of unfairness.”
If Cohen does indeed agree to cooperate with investigators in the U.S. Attorney’s office in the Southern District of New York and Special Counsel Robert Mueller, it could precipitate calls for Trump to be impeached and even indicted on crimes ranging from bank fraud to illegal campaign contributions.
