Trump apologist David Bossie appeared on Fox News Friday to repeat President Donald Trump’s claim that the Russia investigation is “rigged” because it’s based on the Steele dossier paid for by the DNC and Hillary Clinton’s campaign.
While speaking to reporters outside the White House, Trump ranted about the “witch hunt” and accused Special Counsel Robert Mueller of having “conflicts” before demanding that investigators investigate Democrats instead.
“Mueller has a lot of conflicts also directly,” Trump said. “You know that Mr. Mueller is highly conflicted. In fact, Comey is, like, his best friend. I could go into conflict after conflict. Sadly, Mr. Mueller is conflicted. Let him write his report. We did nothing. There’s no collusion. But if he was doing an honest report, he would write it on the other side because when you look at criminality and you look at problems, take a look at what they did, including colluding with the Russians, the other side.”

Except that it was members of Trump’s campaign that met with Russian agents inside Trump Tower in June 2016 to get “dirt” on Clinton from the Russian government, not the other way around.
On Fox, Bossie took up Trump’s claims and expanded upon them.
“This entire case is based on opposition research, Bossie said, calling the investigation the “fruit of the poisonous tree.”
“Paid for by the DNC, paid for by the Clinton campaign,” he continued.
It should be pointed out that the Steele dossier Bossie is referring to was originally commissioned by a conservative website. The DNC only started paying for the research to continue after the website abandoned the project because Trump became the nominee. And some of the dossier has since been verified.
Plus, the dossier was not the trigger of the investigation, as Fox News host Jessica Tarlov explained in response to Bossie’s claims.
“That’s not true,” she said, prompting an argument from Bossie until she shut him up with facts.
“I am absolutely not lying about this when you say it’s not true,” she continued. “This started with George Papadopoulos because of a conversation he had with Australian diplomats. That is how the ‘Russian witch hunt’ started.“
The look on Bossie’s face as he gets his ass handed to him says it all.

And Tarlov is correct. An Australian diplomat alerted the FBI after Papadopoulos, a Trump foreign policy adviser, drunkenly bragged about Russia having “dirt” on Clinton.
In fact, even the GOP memo written by Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) conceded that the FBI investigation began before they knew about the dossier.
Trump and Bossie clearly hope that by repeating the same lie over and over again that it will displace the facts and lead to the end of the Russia investigation. But that’s not going to happen as long as there are people like Tarlov around to fact-check them.
