Michael Cohen, who served for years as President Donald Trump’s personal attorney, can feel that his life is about to change in a way that will fundamentally alter every decision he makes from this point forward, and he’s warning his friends to expect the worse.

According to Gabriel Sherman of Vanity Fair, Cohen has told close friends and associates that he fully expects to be arrested any day now, and the prospect of the arrest is also on the mind of the president. A Republican close to Trump told Sherman:

“Donald is very worried.”

Trump is so nervous about the upcoming “inflection point” on the Russia investigation that he’s also seriously considering firing both Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

Perhaps more troubling for the president is the fact that Cohen knows all about Trump’s questionable business deals, payoffs to women he slept with, and other dirty laundry that could conceivably come to light if indeed Cohen decides to save his own hide and cooperate with federal investigators. One White House official told Sherman:

“Trump should be super worried about Michael Cohen. If anyone can blow up Trump, it’s him.”

An outside adviser to Trump also noted that Trump now feels free to do anything he wants if it will relieve the pressure he feels from the ongoing Russia probe:

“We’ve entered the era of primal Trump.”

Some Republicans have openly warned the president that should he try to dismiss Mueller, he will be crossing a red line that ends with his impeachment. Recently, Senators Jeff Flake (R-AZ) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) were clear what happens if the special counsel is fired, with Flake remarking:

“If [Trump] fires [Mueller] without cause, how different is that from what Nixon did with the Saturday Night Massacre? He left before impeachment came, but that was the remedy then and that would be the remedy now.”

What remains to be seen is whether or not Trump will take the advice of others and, if he chooses not to, if enough Congressional Republicans will finally grow spines and demand his immediate ouster.
