With the December 12 special election in Alabama looming, prominent Republicans — including President Donald Trump — are voicing their support for embattled candidate Roy Moore.
Mike Huckabee Goes Off The Deep End Again
The former judge has faced numerous allegations of sexual misconduct with teen girls while he was in his 30s. Republicans have offered a variety of excuses, saying they want to see another conservative in the Senate, and that the allegations stem from decades ago and Moore has steadfastly denied them, Mediaite reports. They also contend that some Democrats are also guilty of sexual misconduct.
And former governor Mike Huckabee (R-Ark.) echoes these sentiments.
In an interview on Fox News Tuesday morning, Huckabee was asked to predict the outcome of the upcoming Alabama Senate race now that Trump and the Republican National Committee have endorsed and supported Moore.
Huckabee said he was optimistic that Moore might win, saying the Democratic choice, Doug Jones, “is such an unacceptable candidate.” And he took the opportunity to bring up recent Democratic scandals to provide further support for Moore.
“They have a lot of questions about Roy Moore, I understand that,” he said. “But you know it’s down to the fact that as long as [Sen.] Al Franken (D-Minn.) is in the Senate and [Rep. John] Conyers is staying in office, why not have Roy Moore?”
Conyers has since retired, but let’s do a quick review of who was charged with what. We’ll start with Franken. So far, six women have come forward to say he groped them, Time.com reports. Conyers allegedly habitually touched some female staffers’ thighs and buttocks according to NBC News.
What is Moore accused of? Well, among other things, allegedly having sex with a 14-year-old girl when he was 32, notes Diversity Inc. And three other women have come forward, alleging that Moore pursued them when they were 14, 17, and 18, but the encounters never went past the kissing stage, they said.
But Huckabee parrots Trump’s talking points, saying that Moore refutes the charges against him.
“First of all, he’s denied the charges against him vehemently and categorically … none of this is good, none of us like this idea that people have clouds over them, but I think he ultimately wins,” he said.
Perhaps Huckabee is just visiting from the planet Neptune or something because sexual harassment doesn’t have standards. Nowhere should it ever say it’s okay for a grown man or woman to have sex with a teenager. Of course, it happens all the time, but making excuses for it, as Huckabee does here, is … um… inexcusable.
