Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough took Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) to the woodshed on Wednesday after a night in which President Donald Trump riled up his angry mob of supporters into calling for putting Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) in prison.
For weeks, Republicans have been characterizing women and sexual assault survivors who have been protesting against the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court as an “angry mob.”
The protests against Kavanaugh have been peaceful, but Trump spoke to a real angry mob on Tuesday night in Iowa, where he attacked Feinstein and falsely accused her of leaking the identity of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, the woman who credibly accused Kavanaugh of attempted rape.
“How about Senator Feinstein. That’s another beauty,” Trump said as the crowd began to chant “Lock her up” as they had previously done when Trump mentions Hillary Clinton.
“And I think they’re talking about Feinstein, can you believe that?” Trump remarked. “Now was that the worst body language. In other words, did she leak it? A hundred percent. No, I don’t want to get sued, 99 percent. See now, I can’t get … Now I can’t get sued.”
As the Morning Joe panel pointed out, it looked like an episode straight out of George Orwell’s book “1984”.
Scarborough reacted to the chant by mocking McConnell, who had whined about due process and “angry mobs” just this past weekend, for not coming to Feinstein’s defense.
“It’s pretty rich when actually, this weekend you had Republicans, Mitch McConnell (saying) ‘angry mobs,’ there are so many ‘angry mobs,’” he said while mimicking McConnell’s voice, “And they were so concerned about due process, just a couple days ago.”
“Now the president of the United States is holding rallies where angry mobs of people are demanding to lock up a United States senator because they disagree with her politics,” Scarborough continued. “I guess due process and keeping your head, that was in vogue for Republicans last week.”
Willie Geist wondered if Republicans will step up to condemn Trump’s angry mob in light of their accusations and complaining in defense of Kavanaugh. Scarborough continued to slam McConnell.
“Mitch McConnell must be shocked at the angry mobs,” he said. “I mean, the poor guy, he was a snowflake just a couple days ago, just melting on national television because of all the angry mobs. I wonder what Mitch thinks, again, about people talking about locking up one of his colleagues, sending one of his colleagues to jail because they disagree with her politically. That’s an angry mob, right?”

Clearly, Republicans are hypocrites and their own supporters are the true angry mob in this country. They only cry about due process when one of their own is accused, but they have no qualms about demanding Democrats be imprisoned for imaginary crimes they have not been charged, nor convicted for committing. They play the victim when it suits their purposes and then ignore and attack real victims. And we all know Republicans won’t tell their supporters to stop. They want them to be an angry mob. They want to incite violence against Democrats. It’s been their strategy for decades and it won’t stop until the American people rise up and silence the angry conservative minority by stripping them of their power at the ballot box.
