Donald Trump’s remark about seeking more immigrants from Norway has a giant problem. No one from Norway really wants to come here and have every reason to stay where they are.
On Thursday, Trump met with Democrats and Republicans in a meeting to discuss DACA and immigration. The meeting soon went off the rails when Trump referred to Haiti and African nations as “sh*thole countries” and declared that he would rather see immigrants from Norway.
“Why do we want all these people from shithole countries,” Trump said. “We should have more people from Norway.”
Well, the people of Norway have spoken, and Trump is not going to like how they responded.
Conservative Party lawmaker Torbjoern Saetre said “thanks, but no thanks” on Twitter.
On behalf of Norway: Thanks, but no thanks…. 🙄

Norwegian Twitter users and users with connections to Norway also chimed in.
My family came from Norway, and I can tell you that we Norwegians think Trump is a racist “shithole.”

Years ago a #Norwegian colleague moved back to #Norway with his American wife because they were ready to start a family and considered the U.S. too violent and dangerous a place to raise children. #shithole

I spent four years in #Norway and my eldest son is a Norwegian citizen.

My great grandparents came to the US from #Norway.
I am certain they would be appalled by Trump’s comments today, as am I.
Every day, this vulgar, incompetent man derogates the office of the presidency and by extension the American people.
The two sides here? Right and wrong.

Higher education is free. Parents can get up to one year paid leave WITH pay and their job back. Prenatal care and having babies is free. And most get a month or more paid vacation. I lived there. I know. #Norway #Norge

I wish #Norway could trend for a positive reason, instead of us being used for right-wing propaganda by a racist and senile cheeto.

Of course people from #Norway would love to move to a country where people are far more likely to be shot, live in poverty, get no healthcare because they’re poor, get no paid parental leave or subsidized daycare and see fewer women in political power. #Shithole

Indeed, Norway’s social democracy is the main reason why Norwegians have largely stopped immigrating to the United States.
While hundreds of thousands of Norwegians emigrated to the U.S. in the 19th century, just 502 out of a population of 5.3 million people moved there in 2016, down 59 from the previous year, according to Statistics Norway.
So, if Trump wants more immigrants to come from Norway, he’ll have to make it worth their while, an effort that will likely piss off his conservative base, who largely oppose universal healthcare, free education, gun control, parental leave, etc.
Norway Prime Minister Erna Solberg has not commented on Trump’s remarks.
