Earlier this week, the National Rifle Association (NRA) announced that Oliver North would be the new president of the pro-gun organization, and North wasted no time stepping right into hot water with remarks he made about gun control activists, telling the Washington Times:

“They call them activists. That’s what they’re calling themselves. They’re not activists — this is civil terrorism. This is the kind of thing that’s never been seen against a civil rights organization in America. You go back to the terrible days of Jim Crow and those kinds of things — even there you didn’t have this kind of thing. We didn’t have the cyberwar kind of thing that we’ve got today.”

Not only did North manage to equate peaceful protests with terrorism, he also tried to suggest that NRA and other pro-gun groups are facing greater repression than African-Americans did when they lived under the racist rule of government-approved segregation.

The father of a Parkland, Florida, mass shooting survivor read North’s remarks and was incensed by what had been said. Fred Guttenberg, whose 14-year-old daughter died at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, told Newsweek:

“We’re not criminal civil terrorists. We’re people with a broken heart.”

Guttenberg also had a powerful message for North and the NRA:

“The NRA and people like Oliver North, to them, it’s a job. They could retire and go on with their life. I can’t, because my daughter isn’t here.”

Parkland survivors also heaped well-deserved scorn on North, who was tried and convicted on charges of accepting an illegal gratuity, aiding and abetting in the obstruction of a congressional inquiry, and ordering the destruction of documents in the Iran-Contra scandal during the Reagan administration:

It makes sense that North was recruited to head the NRA. He’s always been a snake who will lie about anything in order to gain a personal or political advantage. Now he can do so for the merchants of mass murder who are more interested in profit than safety.
