It now appears that Senate Republicans will indeed be able to push through the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court, and his appointment to the high court could have negative consequences for women’s reproductive rights and LGBT equality in the United States, among other things.

On CNN Wednesday morning, legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin warned that a conservative majority on the court could indeed endanger many rights in the country, including those for LGBT Americans:

“That is why and that is only why Roe v. Wade has survived as the law of the land, because Anthony Kennedy was on the court.  Will Roe v. Wade survive? Will universities be allowed to use race in admissions? May bakers and other small business owners say to gay people, ‘you’re not allowed in here’ and the court says that’s okay?”

But the ultra conservative former GOP Senator from Pennsylvania, Rick Santorum, got very agitated by Toobin’s remarks and began shrieking:

“The idea that there’s a contention that bakers don’t allow gay people in their shops, that’s never been the issue and it’s not the issue.”

In response, Toobin gave Santorum a much-needed lesson in reality, reminding him:

“Oh, they can go in, they just can’t buy anything.”

Still agitated, Santorum began ranting that “no one is saying you can’t walk in and buy a cupcake.”

That led Toobin to reply:

“So there are some products gay people can buy and some products they can’t.”

Growing angrier, Santorum then accused Toobin of “being an extremist.”

Retaining his calm in reaction to Santorum’s raving, Toobin dropped another truth bomb on the former senator:

“Rick, you keep saying these cases are so easy. Watch what happens. Watch how gay people are being denied service.”

As we’ve already seen, religious extremists think they should have the right to impose their beliefs on others. That’s a form of discrimination, and it has no place in this country. People like Rick Santorum and his ilk need to join the 21st century and embrace diversity. Diversity, after all, is one of the things that helped make this the greatest nation in the world.
