With the midterm election now less than three months away and polls showing Democrats will likely gain between 40 and 60 seats in the House of Representatives, Russian state media is panicking and warning that President Donald Trump could be in peril of Democrats take control of Congress.

Julia Davis, who runs the Russian Media Monitor website, notes in an article she wrote for the Daily Beast that hosts and political figures on Russian state TV are apoplectic, terrified that Trump may be impeached or that Democrats will pass a “sanctions bill from hell” that might cripple the Russian economy:

“[Politician Sergei] Stankevich, the head of the international affairs committee for the Party of Growth, argued that the very fate of Trump is at stake in the midterm elections. Vitaly Tretyakov, dean of Moscow State University’s School of Television, insisted with a certain note of irony that Russia should act decisively in response to the new sanctions, pressuring Trump by threatening to withdraw Russian support in the midterms.”

Others in Russia are even suggesting that the Kremlin take preemptive retaliatory actions against the United States for sanctions already in place, including a new package of economic and trade penalties passed last year by a veto-proof majority in both houses of Congress:

“A gaggle of pro-Kremlin talking heads voiced a series of other proposals Russia should implement in retaliation for the U.S. sanctions, such as ‘start arresting Americans,’ shut down American businesses operating in Russia, form an anti-American front with the enemies of the United States, steal Western technologies and confiscate funds from Russia’s nouveaux riches to compensate for the losses caused by the sanctions.”

All of this suggests a much larger threat: That Russia will again attempt to attack the 2018 midterms via hacking and other forms of cyber warfare. Will they try to guarantee that Republicans keep control of Congress and Trump remains in office, all but guaranteeing that the Mueller probe would be short-circuited by Trump? Based on what’s being said on Russian media these days, it seems safe to assume that the Russians will not just sit and watch.
