President Donald Trump went all out to scare senior citizens in an op-ed published by USA Today on Wednesday in which he attacks Democrats and lies about Medicare.
Democrats currently have legislation that would revolutionize healthcare in this country by enacting a “Medicare for All” plan, which would finally bring universal healthcare to the United States.
The plan would cover everyone in the country like similar healthcare systems in Canada and the United Kingdom have been successfully doing for decades. It would mean a small tax hike, mostly on the wealthy, but would eliminate the need for costly insurance from private companies that are sometimes more likely to deny coverage instead of paying for the care people need.
But Trump began by claiming that Democrats are stripping seniors of their healthcare and claimed that the cost of the plan is too high.
Throughout the year, we have seen Democrats across the country uniting around a new legislative proposal that would end Medicare as we know it and take away benefits that seniors have paid for their entire lives.
Dishonestly called “Medicare for All,” the Democratic proposal would establish a government-run, single-payer health care system that eliminates all private and employer-based health care plans and would cost an astonishing $32.6 trillion during its first 10 years.
Trump isn’t lying about the cost, but he’s leaving out the fact that the Democrat’s plan would actually save trillions of dollars in the long run, and that’s according to the same study Trump cited.
Business Insider reports that “total health spending would actually come in about $303 billion lower in 2031 than under current projections, with $7.35 trillion going to healthcare that year versus $7.65 trillion expected now. Total national health spending would be $2 trillion lower from 2022 to 2031 under the plan, the report found.”
Trump then tried to take credit for health insurance premiums dropping by 2 percent, but his own source disputes his claim by quoting Kaiser Family Foundation vice-president Larry Levitt.
“ACA premiums are stable for 2019 because they went up so much this year due to an uncertain environment and regulatory actions by the Trump administration,” Levitt wrote. “Premiums would be going down a lot if not for the repeal of the individual mandate penalty and expansion of short-term plans.”
In other words, Trump is taking credit for something that was going to happen anyway, and would have come down even more — had Trump left Obamacare alone.
Trump then tried to fear monger in order to scare seniors into thinking Democrats are going to take away their Medicare.
The Democrats’ plan means that after a life of hard work and sacrifice, seniors would no longer be able to depend on the benefits they were promised. By eliminating Medicare as a program for seniors, and outlawing the ability of Americans to enroll in private and employer-based plans, the Democratic plan would inevitably lead to the massive rationing of health care. Doctors and hospitals would be put out of business. Seniors would lose access to their favorite doctors. There would be long wait lines for appointments and procedures. Previously covered care would effectively be denied.
In practice, the Democratic Party’s so-called Medicare for All would really be Medicare for None. Under the Democrats’ plan, today’s Medicare would be forced to die.
The Democrats’ plan also would mean the end of choice for seniors over their own health care decisions. Instead, Democrats would give total power and control over seniors’ health care decisions to the bureaucrats in Washington, D.C.
But that couldn’t be further from the truth. Under the Democrat’s plan, every American, including senior citizens, would be covered. The Democrats are not taking anything away from senior citizens. In fact, senior citizens would be able to see their children and grandchildren covered by the same government healthcare that they currently enjoy.
Of course, that’s if the program stays solvent or still even exists by the time Trump leaves office.
According to the New York Times, the Medicare Trust Fund is set to run out in just eight years. And that’s after the administration had previously said it would run out in eleven years. But Trump and Republicans pushed through a massive tax giveaway for the wealthy that has hurt revenue for the program, and now Republicans plan to use the ballooning deficit they caused to cut Medicare or turn it into a useless voucher program or shift seniors to private insurance companies that really don’t care about them.
After all, the reason why Medicare was created in the first place is that private insurance companies refused to cover seniors because their healthcare costs are much higher.
The bottom line is that Trump is the one who is on a mission to kill Medicare and throw seniors under the bus. He’s just trying to scare seniors into voting for Republicans in November. This is a desperate ploy to prevent a blue wave that would put Democrats in control of Congress. Democrats have a plan that will cost less and will cover everybody. That’s the gold standard in every developed country in the world except for ours. It’s time to change that and give Americans the healthcare coverage they deserve. Trump won’t do that. Only Democrats will.
