While some of the most deployed American soldiers stood behind him, President Donald Trump fell on his face while trying to tell a bad joke about military pay raises, suggesting that “real patriots” don’t take pay raises.
In remarks made during the signing ceremony of the John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act, Trump not only snubbed McCain by refusing to even mention his name, he also insulted the men and women of our military.
“They never gave us money for the military for years and years,” Trump claimed “And it was depleted. We got $700 billion.”
That’s a massive lie. Trump has pretended since running for office that the military has not been funded for years when, in fact, it has been the biggest item on the budget for decades, with spending being near or going beyond $600 billion every year since before 2015 and representing over 50 percent of spending by the United States government. It’s never been “depleted” as Trump claims.
Furthermore, our military budget has been the biggest in the world for decades and even if we cut it in half, it would still be the biggest.
And then Trump face-planted as our soldiers watched:
“More than $11 billion for the military construction, including family housing. And we are proudly giving our troops the biggest pay increase in a decade. And I know you don’t want it because you’re very patriotic. You’ll say, just save the money. We’re going to pay down debt. Does anybody not want it? Please raise your hand. What’s going on here? Are these real patriots? I don’t know, General. I don’t know. It’s the biggest increase in a decade.”
Trump actually questioned the patriotism of our troops because they got a pay raise and didn’t reject it.

Let’s not forget that Trump himself dodged the draft five times during the Vietnam War. He has also been too cowardly to visit our troops inside a war zone, something his predecessors had done on multiple occasions. Yet, he has the gall to “joke” that our troops aren’t “real patriots” because they got a pay raise.
Of course, Trump also told another big lie during his remarks when he claimed that our troops haven’t had a pay raise in ten years.
Trump previously made the same claim back in May, and Politifact fact-checked him:
Trump was “totally incorrect,” said Todd Harrison, director of defense budget analysis at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. “The military has gotten a pay raise each and every year.”
And the most recent pay raise wasn’t even the biggest in the past 10 years; it was exceeded by raises in 2008, 2009 and 2010, during the Bush and Obama administrations.
Trump keeps pretending that he’s God’s gift to the military, but our military has been well funded for decades and our soldiers get a pay raise every year. However, it should also be pointed out that for all these pay raises, many of our soldiers and their families have to rely on food stamps and other welfare programs to get by. And Trump is currently slashing many of these programs, meaning our troops and their families will suffer.
If Trump was a “real patriot” he would be demanding Congress raise troop pay even more so that they wouldn’t have to rely on food stamps at all. And if he were a “real patriot” he would care enough about the nation to cut the massive defense budget and use the money on domestic programs to build our nation and citizens up so that no one ever has to worry about healthcare and other basics of living ever again.
Trump made a complete ass of himself in front of our brave men and women in uniform, yet he thinks he deserves a military parade.
