Now that President Trump is in the house cleaning mood when it comes to members of his administration, it appears he’s also looking for ways to end the Mueller probe, even though he continues to insist that he’s done nothing wrong.

Gabriel Sherman of Vanity Fair reports that Trump is already working on a plan that would allow him to end the investigation being conducted by Special Counsel Robert Mueller:

“Perhaps most consequential for Robert Mueller’s investigation, sources said Trump has discussed a plan to fire Attorney General Jeff Sessions. According to two Republicans in regular contact with the White House, there have been talks that Trump could replace Sessions with E.P.A. Administrator Scott Pruitt, who would not be recused from overseeing the Russia probe. Also, as an agency head and former state attorney general, Pruitt would presumably have a good shot at passing a Senate confirmation hearing.”

If Pruitt passed Senate confirmation, he would then be free to fire Mueller and end the Russia probe entirely. Whether or not this would lead to a Constitutional crisis that would force the hand of recalcitrant Republicans in the House and Senate remains unclear. However, if the GOP did acquiesce and allow Mueller to be dismissed, it might allow Trump to escape justice for any crimes he may have committed during the 2016 election.

Trump has repeatedly attacked Sessions ever since the Attorney General recused himself from overseeing the special counsel. He has called Sessions “disgraceful,” “weak,” and “beleaguered.” He also reportedly refers to Sessions as “Mr. Magoo.”

Earlier this week, after the president dismissed Secretary of State Rex Tillerson via Twitter, he commented:

“I’m really at a point where we’re getting very close to having the Cabinet and other things that I want.”

Nothing would please Trump and his most fervent supporters more than seeing Mueller shown the door. All that remains to be seen is whether or not Trump will take the steps that could precipitate his own impeachment.
