Who sent an envelope full of white powder to Donald Trump Jr.’s wife this week?
The incident is still being investigated by authorities, although NBC New York reports that the envelope was postmarked from Boston. The latest revelation about the white powder scare is its contents. Here’s what the letter said:
“You are an awful, awful person. I am surprised that your father lets you speak on TV. You the family idiot. Eric looks smart. This is the reason why people hate you. You are getting what you deserve. So shut the f—- up.”
The letter was notably addressed to Trump Jr., not his wife. Vanessa Trump opened the envelope at her apartment in Manhattan on Monday and was hospitalized after complaining of coughing and nausea.
Authorities determined that the contents of the envelope appeared to be corn starch, but the powder was taken to a lab for further testing.
According to NBC, receiving white powder in the mail is nothing new for the Trumps. In 2016, police detectives and FBI agents investigated a similar letter sent Eric Trump’s Manhattan apartment. Envelopes containing white powder were also sent to Trump tower twice in 2016.
One of the president’s attorneys released this statement:
“How disturbed must a person be to do what they did to a mother of five young children? This dangerous and reckless act goes beyond political differences.”
The truly disturbing incident should be a sign to the sitting president that his divisive agenda is creating an environment where every person, himself and his family included, faces a heightened risk of violence every single day.
The Trumps could use this moment to practice empathy for the communities the administration is attacking through use of federal agencies. Perhaps, Trump would take the opportunity to promote greater access to mental health services.
Instead, Trump Jr. tweeted this:
“Thankful that Vanessa & my children are safe and unharmed after the incredibly scary situation that occurred this morning. Truly disgusting that certain individuals choose to express their opposing views with such disturbing behavior.”
Disturbing, indeed. We are all thankful that the white powder was harmless. But America’s political instability is not something to underestimate.
